Research in Robotics, Artificial Intelligence and Autonomous Systems for the Offshore Sector

The Offshore Robotics for the Certification of Assets (ORCA) Hub is a research programme of a group of universities and several partners developing Robotics, Artificial Intelligence and Autonomous Systems for the offshore sector. The hubs aim is to develop research and discovery science into commercial products and services in order to support the UK offshore supply chain and make it the most productive in the world. This aim is supported by a long term industry vision for autonomous and semi-autonomous offshore energy fields; operated, inspected and maintained from the shoreline.

An additional eight UK institutions joined the Hub in January 2020 as part of the ORCA Partnership Resource Fund. The nine research projects will expand the Hub’s work into new areas with a clearly identified industrial need.

The ORCA Hub is split into four separate work packages which focus on:

  1. Mapping, Surveying and Inspection
  2. Planning, Control and Manipulation
  3. Intelligent Human-Robot Interaction
  4. Robot and Asset Self-Certification
