New Publication: Dynamic Fluid Ingress Detection in Geomaterials using K-band Frequency Modulated Continuous Wave Radar

Jamie Blanche and Prof. David Flynn of the Smart Systems Group (SSG) are pleased to share their latest publication, “Dynamic Fluid Ingress Detection in Geomaterials using K-band Frequency Modulated Continuous Wave Radar” in IEEE Access. This publication represents collaborative research performed by the Smart Systems Group, the Institute of Geoenergy Engineering at Heriot-Watt University and Laboratoire 3SR and Institut Laue-Langevin (ILL) in Grenoble, France.

Benchmarking the sensitivity of microwave radar with neutron tomography will advance non-contact sensing of fluid flow in many types of porous media, not just the sandstones tested in this publication. Frequency modulated continuous wave (FMCW) radar is a highly versatile sensing modality and the SSG is at the forefront of development, both as a standalone sensor and for integrated robotic applications of asset integrity and simultaneous location and mapping (SLAM) operations.
